Tucson High grad Delaney Schnell Pac-12’s 1-meter diving champ

Arizona Swimming and Diving capped off Day 1 of the 2021 Pac-12 Championships with diver Delaney Schnell, a Tucson High grad, crowned champion of the 1-meter dive. 

Schnell won the event by a landslide as she put up a score of 343.45, nearly 30 more points than the runner-up who scored 313.90.

Arizona’s Gracie Sleeman finished third in the consolation final and 11th overall as she scored a 259.50.

After Day 1, the Wildcats are atop the standings with a score total of 179 with Cal close behind with 168 points.

Schnell, a 2016 graduate of Tucson High, was a two-time USA Dive National Champion while in high school. She was a silver medalist at the Junior Pan American Championships and second in the 2016 women’s 10-meter synchronized diving trials.

When she competed with Tucson as a freshman, she was a state champion and record holder.

The Wildcat women saw a podium finish of their own Wednesday night, as the 800 free relay team (Amalie Mortensen, Molly Batchelor, Julia Heimstead, Casslyn Treydte) placed 3rd with a time of 7:05.32.

The swimming prelims are Thursday at 9 a.m. followed up by more diving competition at 10 a.m.
