Arizona’s Susac, Berry named to NCBWA Freshman All-American Team


Arizona designated hitter Jacob Berry and catcher Daniel Susac are among 34 standout freshmen college baseball players featured on the 2021 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-America Team, the organization announced Monday.

Susac is batting .329 with 12 home runs and 61 RBIS and Berry has a .359 batting average with 17 home runs and 70 RBIs.

They are two significant contributors to Arizona making its 18th College World Series appearance. The Wildcats open the CWS in Omaha, Neb., with a game Saturday against Vanderbilt at 4 p.m., Tucson time on ESPN.

The 2021 NCBWA Freshman All-America Team features players from 29 different schools and 12 different conferences.

Arizona, LSU and Texas Tech were the only programs with two players on the first team. California and TCU featured two players on the second team.

The Big 12 led all conferences with seven players selected to the two teams combined, placing four players on the first team and three on the second team. The SEC (four first team and two second team) and Pac-12 (two first team and four second team) put six players each on the team.

Susac and Berry were named Collegiate Baseball All-Americans and national Co-Freshmen of the Year last week.

Berry is also a finalist for the Slugger Award and he is a Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Award semifinalist.

Susac is a semifinalist for the Buster Posey Award.
