FC Tucson 19U opens regional with win, RSL-AZ So. Arizona 13U ends in draw

The U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships started Monday at Boise, Idaho, with four female soccer teams from Tucson challenging for titles.

The FC Tucson 19U team, coached by Pima men’s soccer coach David Cosgrove, won its opening round game 3-0 over Orange County (Calif.) team FC Premier in a Bracket B game.

The goals were scored by Hailey Ramos of Buena High School, Ellie Robinson of Pusch Ridge and Mari Acosta of Sahuarita. Ramos is headed to Air Force, Robinson to New Mexico and Acosta to Pima College.

FC Tucson 19U next plays Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Long Beach (Calif.) team Beach Futbol Club. A victory for Cosgrove’s team would earn it a spot in the quarterfinals that start Friday.

FC Tucson 17U lost 4-0 on Monday to the Los Angeles Soccer Club. It plays Wednesday at noon against Utah Soccer Alliance USA Metro Premier.

RSL-AZ Southern Arizona 08 13U finished in a 2-2 draw with the Boise Timbers. Jhianae DesRosier and Luz Mendoza scored the goals for the team coached by Paul DesRosier.

The draw enables the DesRosier’s team to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals out of Bracket C.

The RSL-AZ Southern Arizona 06 15U team, also coached by DesRosier, plays its first game Tuesday at 8 a.m. against Salt Lake City’s League 30.

League 30 defeated Billings (Mont.) United BU Pink on Monday, so the RSL-AZ Southern Arizona 15U team needs a win to keep pace.
