Arizona Little League state baseball tournament results & schedules

Southern Arizona teams Canyon View and Sierra Vista will meet today at 7:45 p.m. in an elimination-bracket game of the Arizona Little League 8-9-10 state tournament at Field of Dreams.

Sierra Vista defeated Safford Mount Graham 10-0 to remain alive in the tournament, while Canyon View lost to Paradise Valley North 4-3 in a winner’s bracket game on Monday night.

Sierra Vista’s Crue Isaacson and Gio Herrera set the tone as the top two batters in the lineup against Mount Graham in the elimination-bracket victory. Isaacson hit a triple, walked twice and scored three runs, and Herrera had two hits, one of them a triple, and scored two runs with two RBIs.

Jace Jordan, Riley Shamas and Herrera combined on the shutout in the five-inning game.

Canyon View took a 3-0 lead in the third inning against Paradise Valley North behind run-producing groundouts by Casey Casper and Miles Anderson and an RBI single by Lucas Runyon.

Paradise Valley North tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the fifth with Bryce Mitchell’s RBI single the lone hit of the rally.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Paradise Valley North’s Jackson Elmer reached on an error and moved to third on a single by Finlee Wert. Jax McMugh followed with a single up the middle, plating Elmer for the walk-off-winning run.

“They just gotta come back and compete (against District 8 champ Sierra Vista),” Canyon View manager Zak Anderson said. “It was a great game. They competed all the way to the end. I’m hopeful they’ll show up against Sierra Vista and do their best.

“We have a really good group of kids who will compete, and I expect them to do that. They have great attitudes. They’ve got just a natural desire to want to do well.”

Canyon View’s Luke Newman went 3 for 3 with a run and was also effective as the starting pitcher, going two scoreless innings with two strikeouts and no walks. Miles Anderson had five strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of relief and had an RBI at the plate.

Kevin Curtis also went 2 for 4 with a run for Canyon View, the District 5 champion that is now 5-1 including the district tournament.

Canyon View’s 9-10-11 team was eliminated from the state tournament at Litchfield Park in a 12-7 loss to Anthem High Desert on Monday night.

Sierra Vista is in the elimination bracket after losing 20-0 Monday to host Litchfield Park, which has outscored three opponents 67-2 in the tournament.

Sierra Vista will try to stay alive in a game Tuesday against High Desert at 6:30 p.m.

The Majors state tournament resumes in Tempe on Tuesday night with Oro Valley and Sunnyside playing in the winner’s bracket semifinals.

Oro Valley faces Queen Creek at 6 p.m. and Sunnyside is scheduled to play Chandler North at 8.

The winner of those games play Thursday at 6 p.m. in the winner’s bracket final.

If it’s Oro Valley vs. Sunnyside in that game, a Tucson would team would be assured a spot in the winner-take-all championship game Saturday. The winner of the tournament advances to the West Regional in San Bernardino, Calif., one step from the Little League World Series at Williamsport, Pa.

Continental Ranch advanced to the championship by defeating Phoenix Arcadia 9-6 in the winner’s bracket final on Monday night at Nogales.

Continental Ranch advanced to the championship Wednesday at 6 p.m. It will play the winner of the Arcadia-Nogales elimination-bracket final that is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Jaden Villarreal went 3 for 4 with two runs and three RBIs for Continental Ranch in its win over Arcadia. Villarreal had a double and a triple.

Javi Muro was 2 for 3 with three runs and an RBI. He also had a triple and a stolen base.
