Four teams remain in the Majors state baseball tournament at Tempe and two of them are from Tucson — Oro Valley and Sunnyside.
Oro Valley stayed alive on Wednesday night with a 9-4 win over Goodyear in an elimination-bracket game. Manager Ena Madrid’s team will play Chandler National North on Thursday night at 8 p.m.
Sunnyside (3-0 in the tournament after winning the District 12 title with a 5-1 record) will face Queen Creek in the winner’s s bracket final at 6 p.m. If Sunnyside wins, it advances to the winner-take-all championship on Saturday (the winner’s bracket winner is not afforded a loss in the championship round).
The state champ advances to the West Regional at San Bernardino, Calif., next week with the potential to qualify there for the Little League World Series at Williamsport, Pa.
Oro Valley, coming off a 4-3 loss to Queen Creek in seven innings Tuesday, was led by two hits apiece from Sito Graves, Evan Wheeler and Daniel Armenta in the convincing victory over Goodyear.
Oro Valley tallied 13 hits including home runs by Nick Aronson and Graves. Armenta and Wheeler each had doubles.
Wheeler is 10 for 13 (.769) with seven runs, four home runs, two doubles and nine RBIs in the four games of the state tournament. Graves is 8 for 15 (.533) with five runs, a double, three home runs and six RBIs.
