Reece Nilsen with a semifinal finish at the 97th Arizona Amateur

Former Catalina Foothills standout Reece Nilsen finished in the semifinal round of the Arizona Golf Association (AGA) 97th Arizona Amateur held at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale last week.

Nilsen was tied for second after the qualifying rounds for the Match Play Championship with a 9-under-par 135 and former Canyon del Oro standout Jonathan Walters was ties for ninth place at 139.

Walters made it to the Round of 32 of the Hogan Bracket where former Sabino standout Greg Cesarek emerged 2 & 1. Cesarek lost in the Round of 16 to Matthew Braley of GCU 1-Up.

Nilsen took care of former Dorado BJ Workman 3 & 2 in the Round of 16 before getting past David Scott 3 & 1 to advance to the Semifinal Round on Friday where he lost to eventual champion Kristoffer Marshall of Scottsdale 1-Up. Marshall beat Evan White of Texas 2 & 1. White was the champion last year.

Nilsen plays for Northern Illinois and he was part of the Falcon’s 2016 state championship team.
