5A Southern: Flowing Wells

2020 record: 1-2 before COVID-19 cut the season short.

Head coach: Scott Cortese, 3-10 third year at Flowing Wells and 19-36 seventh year overall. Cortese has previous head coaching experience at Catalina Foothills from 2009 to 2012. He was the defensive coordinator at Ironwood Ridge when Jake Fischer starred there as a linebacker before Fischer went on to excel at Arizona. He also served as a defensive coordinator at Marana and Flowing Wells (serving under legendary Mark Brunenkant with the Caballeros).

Notes: Flowing Wells may play eight of its 10 regular season on the road because of ongoing renovations made to its field and stadium. Cortese said he is hopeful of the field being ready for the last two games scheduled at Flowing Wells: Cholla on Nov. 5 and Salpointe Nov. 12. … The Caballeros open Thursday against Amphi in the Coaches for Charity season-opening event. Four of the next six games are extensive road trips to Surprise Willow Canyon, Marana, Nogales and Buena (Sierra Vista). Keep an eye on seniors Tyler Evans and Jonathan O’Dell, both of whom can play at the next level if given the opportunity to play enough times in front of college scouts. Both of the them veterans — Evans at running back and linebacker and Odell at receiver and strong safety. … Offensive coordinator Bryant Stott attended CDO before moving to St. George, Utah, as a senior in 2003-04. He is a Tucson native who played at Southern Utah University.
