Football Week 5 Schedule: Salpointe at Cienega starts things off on Thursday


5A Salpointe (1-0) at 5A Cienega (1-1)
Cienega is 4-2 against Salpointe with the last loss to the Lancers coming in 2006. The programs have not played since 2017, however.


5A Marana (2-0) at 6A Tucson (0-1)
Tucson holds a slim 2-1 margin over Marana with the loss coming last year. Marana was considered a “small school” from 1951 to 1993.

5A Nogales (1-0) at 5A Cholla (1-1)
Nogales holds a 16-10 lead on Cholla dating back to 1970. Cholla’s last victory came in 2005, the year the team went 9-3 with a quarterfinal finish.

5A Campo Verde (1-1) at 5A Ironwood Ridge (1-1)
Campo Verde is 2-0 over Ironwood Ridge since 2018.

5A Rincon/UHS (0-2) at 5A Maryvale (0-2)
The first meeting for the two programs.

5A Paradise Valley (1-1) at 5A Sunnyside (1-1)
The first meeting for the two programs.

5A Mountain View (0-1) at 4A Sahuaro (0-1)
Mountain View is 10-4 against Sahuaro dating back to 1993 including 35-7 last year.

5A Flowing Wells (0-2) at 4A Empire (1-1)
Flowing Wells leads the series 3-1 dating back to 2013.

4A Catalina Foothills (0-2) at 4A Pueblo (1-0)
Catalina Foothills leads Pueblo 11-4 dating back to 1997. Pueblo hasn’t won since 2004.

4A Canyon del Oro (0-2) at 4A Poston Butte (1-1)
CDO beat Poston Butte and Paul Moro 34-28 in 2015 – the only meeting.

4A Thunderbird (1-1) at 4A Amphitheater (2-0)
The first meeting for the two schools.

4A Rio Rico (0-1) at 4A Walden Grove (1-1)
Walden Grove is 6-1 against Rio Rico dating back to 2013, the year Rio Rico won.

4A Douglas (1-0) at 3A Safford (3-0)
Possibly the longest rivalry this week with Douglas leading Safford 24-12 dating back to 1927. The teams haven’t played since 2012.

3A Sahuarita (0-3) at 3A Pusch Ridge (3-0)
Pusch Ridge is 5-0 against Sahuarita dating back to 2015.

3A Sabino (2-1) at 3A Thatcher (3-0)
The first meeting between the two programs.

2A Catalina (1-2) at 3A ALA Ironwood (1-2)
The first meeting with ALA Ironwood playing AIA games starting in 2018.

2A Willcox (3-0) at 2A Valley Lutheran (1-2)
The first meeting between the two programs.

2A AZ Lutheran (3-0) at 2A Santa Cruz (2-1)
The teams are 1-1 since 2018.

2A NFL Yet (2-1) at 2A Benson (1-1)
The first meeting between the two programs.

Tombstone is 5-0 dating back to 2011.

Mogollon leads 2-1 dating back to 2009 with both wins coming in the state playoffs.

Baboquivari leads 1-0 with a 74-0 win in 2019.

1A San Manuel (3-0) at 1A Valley Union (2-1)
Valley Union beat San Manuel 58-0 in 2020.

Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014, he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017, a 2019 AZ Education News award winner and he has been a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. He was the first in Arizona to write about high school beach volleyball and high school girls wrestling.
