— Tucson High (0-3) will look to win the first game of the Richard Sanchez era at Rincon/University on Friday.

5A Salpointe 34, 5A Ironwood Ridge 9

SALPOINTE

— The Lancers have started 3-0 for the fourth consecutive season. They head to Scottsdale on Friday for a showdown with Saguaro, which has on its staff former Marana coach Louie Ramirez.

— QB Treyson Bouguet, a senior, passed for 99 yards, completing 7 of 16 passes with a TD and also rushed for 78 yards on 10 carries with a TD.

— RB Anthony Wilhite, a senior, rushed for 89 yards on 15 carries with a TD.

— LB Joey Sumlin, a senior who is the youngest son of former Arizona coach Kevin Sumlin, led the Lancers with 11 tackles (which included a sack).

— PK Owen Lynch, a senior, made both of his field goal attempts, the longest from 41 yards, and converted all four of his point-after tries.

IRONWOOD RIDGE

— QB Tyler Haynie, a senior, completed 10 of 21 passes for 131 yards.

— RB Jordan Thomas, a junior, finished with 65 yards on 18 rushes with a TD.

— WR Andrew Cain, a junior, had three catches for 72 yards.

5A Gilbert 42, 5A Nogales 0

— Nogales lost its first game after a 2-0 start. The Apaches look to get back on the winning track when they host Flowing Wells (1-3) on Friday night.

— QB Will Howell, a sophomore, completed 8 of 12 passes for 149 yards with two TDs.

— WR Deven Sanchez, a senior, had three receptions for 58 yards and a TD.


5A Sunnyside 41, 5A Buena 24

BUENA

— RB Jelani Brown, a senior, rushed for 112 yards on 19 carries with two TDs.

— DE William Stemler, a senior, tallied 11 tackles, including one for loss.

SUNNYSIDE

— QB Deion Conde, a junior, completed 14 of 19 passes for 191 yards with four TDs an no interceptions.

— RB Brock McDaniel, a senior, rushed for 153 yards on 16 carries with a TD.

— WR/DB Armando Guzman, a senior, had four catches for 54 yards and he returned an interception 30 yards for a TD.

— LB Johnny Rendon, a senior, had 14 tackles including one for loss.

5A Marana 56, 5A Flowing Wells 7

MARANA

— Marana is 4-0 for the first time since the 2018 season when QB Trenton Bourguet was a senior. The Tigers have not started 5-0 since 1998 when Marty Honea was the head coach.

— QB Elijah Joplin, a junior, completed 17 of 26 pass attempts for 338 yards with five TDs and no interceptions, and he rushed six times for 27 yards and a TD.

— RB Matthew Jensen, a junior, had 81 yards rushing on 14 carries.

— WR Chika Ebunoha, a senior, had two receptions for 86 yards and a TD.

— WR/DB Samuel Brown, a junior, caught nine passes for 179 yards with four TDs, and he had seven tackles, 2.5 for loss, with an interception

— LB Troy Fox, a senior, had nine tackles, two for loss (one a sack).

— LB Daniel Parrish, a senior, tallied eight tackles, one for loss.

4A Empire 38, 5A Cholla 0

EMPIRE

— QB Miles Kinney, a senior, completed 11 of 14 passes for 208 yards with three TDs and no interceptions and also rushed for a TD.

— RB/LB Jake Lambert, a senior, rushed 28 times for 171 yards and a TD, and he also had a team-high 11 tackles.

— WR Jacob Puentes, a senior, had four receptions for 131 yards and two TDs.

— LB Jordan Naveunxay, a sophomore, had three tackles for loss, 2.5 of them were sacks.

— PK Jacob Stichter, a senior, made all five of his PATs and converted on his only field goal attempt of 34 yards.


5A Desert View 28, 3A Thatcher 6

DESERT VIEW

— Desert View is 3-0 for the first time since 2016 after making the impromptu trip to Thatcher last week after its homecoming game with Sahuaro was canceled because of COVID-19 protocol impacting the Cougars. Thatcher’s homecoming game with Douglas was canceled because of the Bulldogs’ lack of healthy players. The Jaguars are 3-0 for only the sixth time in program history. They have started 4-0 only three times but only made the state playoffs once in those years — in 2016 when they finished 8-3 with a loss to Queen Creek in the first round.

— QB Oscar Barraza, a senior, completed 6 of 11 passes for 156 yards with two TDs and an INT.

— RB Carlos Alvarez, a senior, rushed 18 times for 139 yards.

— RB/DB Serge Gboweiah, a senior, had nine rushes for 75 yards, nine tackles including a sack and an 89-yard kickoff return for a TD.

— WR Enrique Cancio, a senior, caught three passes for 106 yards.

— LB Sean Sierra, a junior, tallied 12 tackles.


4A Canyon del Oro 21, 4A Catalina Foothills 14

CATALINA FOOTHILLS

— QB Connor Smith, a senior, completed 14 of 19 passes for 137 yards.

— RB Yasuo Bean, a senior, rushed 25 times for 125 yards.

— WR Xavier Norwood-Ramirez, a junior, had four receptions for 50 yards.

CANYON DEL ORO

Dustin Peace’s team won its first game of the season and is 1-3 heading into Friday’s game at home against Amphi School District foe Ironwood Ridge.


4A Pueblo 51, 4A Rio Rico 14

RIO RICO

— Rio Rico (0-3) will look for its first victory of the season Friday when they play at nearby Sahuarita, which is also in search of its first win at 0-5.

PUEBLO

— QB Diego Ramirez, a junior, completed 10 of 12 passes for 182 yards with four TDs and no interceptions.

— RB Victor Rodriguez, a senior, rushed for times for 67 yards.

— WR Andre Blanton, a junior, had two receptions for 102 yards and a TD.

WALDEN GROVE

— Walden Grove coach Corey Noble is bold in his scheduling and that continues this week with the Red Wolves (2-2) traveling to Deer Valley (3-0). That should pay dividends when regional play starts soon.


4A Mica Mountain 13, 3A Coolidge 7

MICA MOUNTAIN

— The Thunderbolts, who played their first three game against junior varsity competition this season, won their first varsity game of their existence Friday. Head coach Pat Nugent has now won at Flowing Wells, CDO, Cienega and Mica Mountain. His 20-year coaching career record is 139-57.

— QB Jayden Thoreson, a freshman, completed 8 of 12 pass attempts for 106 yards with a TD and interception.

— RB Kaspen Colbert, a junior, gained 158 yards on 15 carries.

— WR Jonah Garcia, a junior, caught three passes for 68 yards.

— LB Kason Colbert, a sophomore, had 12 tackles, three of them for loss.

— LB Octavio Vidrio, a junior, had seven tackles, one of them a sack.

— QB Ryan Fontaine, a senior, completed 19 of 32 passes for 192 yards with two TDs and an INT.

— WR/CB Bubba Mustain, a sophomore, had 10 receptions for 139 yards with two TDs, and he had an INT.

— LB Tyler Mustain, a junior, tallied 11 tackles.

— DE Will Way, a junior, had seven tackles, two for loss


3A Sabino 48, 3A Bourgade Catholic 0

— QB Cameron Hackworth, a sophomore, completed 6 of 11 pass attempts for 122 yards and he rushed for 98 yards on five carries with two TDs.

— RB Levi Miranda, a senior, rushed 12 times for 89 yards with a TD.

— LB Mason Cade, a sophomore, recorded three sacks.


3A Safford 34, 3A Sahuarita 10

— Sahuarita (0-5) will try to win its first game of the Jake Price era his Friday at home against winless Rio Rico (0-3).


2A Glendale Prep 18, 2A Santa Cruz 14

— Santa Cruz (2-3) looks to get back on the winning track at Coolidge this Friday after dropping three straight games by a combined eight points — 31-28 to Arizona College Prep, 15-14 to Arizona Lutheran Academy and 18-14 to Glendale Prep Academy.

— RB Diego Chavez, a junior, rushed for 108 yards on six carries with two TDs.

— RB Bryceton Meyers, a freshman, gained 115 yards on three rushes a TD.

— LB Jesse Larsen, a sophomore, tallied 11 tackles.

— DE Abdiel Armenta, a senior, had 10 tackles, one for loss.


2A Willcox 63, 2A North Pointe Prep 0

WILLCOX

— Willcox is 5-0 for the first time since 2011 when the Cowboys started 6-0 under Jim Hughes. That team went on to the state tournament and finished 8-3.

— RB Marcus Olivares, a senior, rushed seven times for 112 yards and three TDs.

— RB/LB Jaden Jenkins, a freshman, had 102 yards on five carries with a TD, and he tallied seven tackles.

— RB Cristian Pando, a junior, finished with 99 yards on nine rushes with three TDs.

— LB Evann Truschke, a junior, had 13 tackles, one for loss.


2A Tanque Verde 42, 2A San Tan Charter 33

TANQUE VERDE

— QB Lucas Franklin, a senior, completed 10 of 21 passes for 234 yards with four TDs and no interceptions.

— RB Rory Maciulla, a senior, rushed nine times for 92 yards with two TDs.

— WR Calvin Jones, a senior, had five receptions for 201 yards with four TDs.

— LB Brayden Scott, a senior, recorded 21 tackles, two for loss, both sacks.

— CB Trevor Clausen, a senior, had two interceptions to go with his six tackles.


2A Tombstone 47, 2A Catalina 0

Tombstone improved to 3-2 while Catalina is now 1-4. The Yellowjackets host Willcox in a 2A San Pedro game Friday. The Trojans have a 2A Rillito game Friday at Sequoia Pathway.

— The Bobcats, who have won their last three games by a combined 140-7, host Pima on Thursday in a 2A San Pedro game.

— QB Brok Determan, a senior, completed 5 of 8 passes for 110 yards with four TDs.

— RB Devin Bowling, a senior, rushed for 85 yards on eight carries

— RB Jace Barney, a senior, had 82 yards on 12 carries with a TD.


1A Duncan 32, 1A Baboquivari 28

— Baboquivari is now 2-1 heading into a rare Tuesday night game at St. David (4-1). The game was rescheduled after Baboquivari’s players were off campus because of COVID-19 protocol when the original game was scheduled Aug. 20 at Baboquivari.


1A San Manuel 56, 1A Fort Thomas 12

SAN MANUEL

— San Manuel is 5-0 for the first time since 2011 when Steve Elmore was the head coach. The Miners finished 8-3 that year after advancing to the 3A state playoffs. The last time San Manuel started 6-0 was in 1994.

— QB Nicolas Velasquez, a sophomore, completed 5 of 7 passes for 192 yards with three TDs and no interceptions.

— RB Noah Huerta, a senior, finished with 101 yards rushing on seven carries with two TDs.

— WR/DB Isaiah Lopez, a senior, caught two passes for 73 yards with a TD, and he had a team-high seven tackles.

— QB Ryan Gooding, a junior, completed 5 of 7 passes for 96 yards with three TDs.

— RB Talon Haynie, a senior, had four carries for 63 yards with two TDs.

— WR Cody Didion, a senior, had a 69-yard TD reception.

— DE Paul Parker, a junior, had eight tackles, two for loss, including a sack.

— LB Brayden Merrill, a senior, had eight tackles, one for loss.
