6A Tucson 42, 5A Rincon/UHS 6

— Tucson achieved the first win of the Richard Sanchez era. Sanchez, the former Sunnyside coach who won two state titles with the Blue Devils, is now 162-80 in his 22nd year as a head coach.

— The Badgers start their 6A East Valley schedule this Friday with a game at Mesa Westwood.

6A Mountain Pointe 68, 5A Buena 26

BUENA

— QB Nash Moore, a freshman, completed 5 of 13 passes for 124 yards with one TD.

— RB Andres Bonilla, a freshman, rushed for 100 yards on 15 carries with a TD.

— WR Rashaud Armstrong, a senior, caught three passes for 92 yards a TD.

— DE William Stemler, a senior, posted 22 tackles, one for loss, and had an interception.

— CB Brett Santa Maria, a senior, tallied 13 tackles.

— LB Rhubin Harris, a senior, had 13 tackles, including two sacks.

5A Saguaro 49, 5A Salpointe 21

SALPOINTE

— The Lancers lost only for the second time under Eric Rogers in his second season as head coach. He is now 10-2.

— RB Anthony Wilhite, a senior, rushed for 125 yards on nine carries and a TD.

5A Sunnyside 58, 5A Cholla 6

SUNNYSIDE

— QB Deion Conde, a junior, completed 5 of 9 passes for 91 yards with two TDs and no interceptions.

— RB Brock McDaniel, a senior, rushed for 89 yards on 12 carries with three TDs.

— WR Samario Garcia, a sophomore, caught three passes for 60 yards.

— PK Mike Vasquez, a junior, made all seven of his PATs and converted 28 yard FG to score 10 points.

5A Desert View 46, 5A Marana 28

DESERT VIEW

— QB Oscar Barraza, a senior, completed 5 of 15 passes for 105 yards and a TD.

— RB Serge Gboweiah, a senior, rushed for 315 yards on 24 carries with three TDs, including scoring runs of 25 and 56 yards.

— RB Carlos Alvarez, a senior, gained 149 yards on 18 carries.

MARANA

— QB Elijah Joplin, a junior, completed 24 of 39 passes for 235 yards with a TD.

— RB Matthew Jensen, a junior, gained 97 yards on nine carries with a TD and also had six receptions for 48 yards.

— WR/DB Sam Brown, a junior, had four catches for 76 yards and also had two interceptions, a fumble recovery and eight tackles.

— LB Troy Fox, a senior, finished with 13 tackles

5A Notre Dame 42, 5A Mountain View 9

MOUNTAIN VIEW

— QB Will Howell, a sophomore, completed 10 of 23 passes for 146 yards and a TD.

— WR Dillon Arvayo, a senior, had six receptions for 102 yards with a TD.

5A Flowing Wells 28, 5A Nogales 0

— Flowing Wells has won two of its last three games (all of the Caballeros’ games are on the road).

— Nogales has lost consecutive games after starting the season 2-0.

5A Campo Verde 23, 5A Cienega 21

— Cienega (1-3) completes its non-region schedule with a trip to Mountain View on Friday.

4A Canyon del Oro 26, 5A Ironwood Ridge 22

CANYON DEL ORO

— CDO has won its last two games to improve to 2-3. The Dorados’ last four games have been decided by a touchdown or less.

— The Dorados welcome high-caliber transfers Chance Cassell (from Ironwood Ridge) and Kayden Luke (Catalina Foothills) to the lineup this week. They both sat out CDO’s first five games before gaining eligibility, per the AIA’s transfer rule. Cassell, a defensive back, and Luke, a running back/linebacker, will join former Oro Valley Dolphins 13U teammate Sa’Kylee Woodard, a lineman, with the Dorados. They won the TYFSF city championship two years ago before playing with the TYFSF 14U All-Star Team. Cassell, Luke and Woodard form a solid sophomore group that will play together for another two years.

IRONWOOD RIDGE

— QB Tyler Haynie, a senior, completed 18 of 28 passes for 281 yards with two TDs.

— RB Landon Billings, a senior, rushed for 65 yards on eight carries with a TD, and he had three receptions for 60 yards.

— WR Andrew Cain, a junior, finished with seven receptions for 123 yards and two TDs.

4A Amphitheater 21, 4A Marcos de Niza 20

AMPHI

— RB Kiko Trejo, a senior, gained 234 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns, including a 94-yard run.

— RB/LB Ashton Haynes, a senior, rushed for 90 yards on 18 carries and also led the team with seven tackles.

4A Arcadia 12, 4A Pueblo 7

PUEBLO

— QB Diego Ramirez, a junior, completed 17 of 36 passes for 79 yards.

— RB Anthony Carpenter, a junior, gained 69 yards on 10 carries with a TD.

— RB Daidryan Mendivil, a senior, rushed 18 times for 65 yards.

4A Deer Valley 63, 4A Walden Grove 35

— Walden Grove’s difficult schedule has included games against Pusch Ridge (5-1), El Cajon (Calif.) Granite Hills (4-2) and Glendale Deer Valley (4-0) — three losses to teams a combined 13-3. The Red Wolves (2-3) play their last non-region game this weekend against visiting Phoenix Greenway, which is 3-1.

3A Pusch Ridge 35, 4A Catalina Foothills 14

PUSCH RIDGE

— Second-year coach Kent Middleton is 13-3 after leading the Lions to the 3A semifinals last season.

— QB Ryan Fontaine, a senior, completed 9 of 16 passes for 163 years with one TD, and he rushed for 88 yards on 10 carries with three TDs.

— RB Javier Grajeda, a senior, rushed 32 times for 138 yards and a TD.

— WR Bryce Jewell, a junior, had five receptions for 78 yards and a TD.

— LB Ethan Jones, a senior, had a team-high 10 tackles.

— LB Tyler Mustain, a junior, tallied nine tackles.

— CB Bubba Mustain, a sophomore, had two interceptions and five tackles.

3A Sahuarita 26, 4A Rio Rico 23 (OT)

— Sahuarita won the first game of the Jake Price era. Price has coached under the likes of Gary Minor, who made Ironwood Ridge a winning program from scratch after it opened in 2001, Andy Litten at Marana and Matt Johnson at Mountain View.

2A Tanque Verde 48, 4A Gila Ridge 21

— Yuma Gila Ridge coach Jessica Slaughter and Tanque Verde coach Jay Dobyns finalized the scheduling of this game last Tuesday after Gila Ridge was in search of a 10th opponent and Tanque Verde was in need of a replacement for Santa Rita, which could not play because of a lack of healthy football players.

— Tanque Verde improved to 7-2 under Dobyns, who is in his second year. Before his hire, Tanque Verde won seven games the previous four years with a 7-33 record from 2016-2019.

— The Hawks played their first game with high-profile Class of 2023 lineman Jack Endean, who had to sit out the first five games due to the AIA’s transfer policy. Endean, who has scholarship offers from Arizona and Cal, transferred from Salpointe.

TANQUE VERDE

— QB Brendan Ganem, a senior, completed 11 of 21 passes for 261 yards with four TDs, and he rushed for 107 yards on 11 carries with a TD.

— WR/DB Calvin Jones, a senior, had seven receptions for 139 yards with two TDs, and he had an interception.

— LB Brayden Scott, a junior, finished with nine tackles, and he snagged an interception.

— LB Garrett Smith, a senior, also had nine tackles.

— CB Robert Stacy, a junior, tallied eight tackles.

— DE C.J. Lopez, a senior, recorded three sacks and he recovered a fumble.

3A Sabino 34, 4A Sahuaro 22

SABINO

— QB Cameron Hackworth, a sophomore, completed 11 of 15 passes for 249 yards with four TDs and no interceptions, and he rushed for 73 yards on seven carries.

— WR Isiah Aguirre, a senior, had three receptions for 82 yards and two TDs.

— WR/DB Derek Sanchez, a senior, finished with two catches for 71 yards.

— LB Marius Lester, a senior, tallied 12 tackles.

SAHUARO

— QB Angel Hightower, a junior, completed 9 of 20 passes for 80 yards and a TD.

— RB Neo Watson, a junior, rushed 18 times for 167 yards and two TDs.

3A Thatcher 55, 4A Empire 17

EMPIRE

— RB/LB Jake Lambert, a senior, had a team-high 10 tackles and he had 53 yards rushing on 15 carries.

— WR Hyrum Tanner, a junior, returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown.

— LB Jordan Naveunxay, a sophomore, returned a fumble 37 yards for a touchdown.

— PK Jacob Stichter, a senior, made both of his PATs and he converted on a 40-yard field goal.

WILLCOX

— The Cowboys improved to 6-0 for the first time since 2011, when they finished 8-3 under Jim Hughes and lost in the first round of the state playoffs. They have not started 7-0 since 2010 when they went unbeaten in the regular season with a 10-0 record and also lost in the first round to rival Thatcher.

2A Morenci 46, 2A Bisbee 7

BISBEE

— The Pumas are 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the 2A San Pedro heading into their game against rival Benson at home Friday.

2A Coolidge 13, 2A Santa Cruz 6

SANTA CRUZ

— The defending 2A champs are 2-4 having lost four straight games by a combined score of 15 points heading into their 2A Rillito opener at Catalina on Friday.

2A Sequoia Pathway 62, 2A Catalina 0

CATALINA

— The Trojans are 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the 2A Rillito heading into their game Friday against visiting Santa Cruz.

1A St. David 48, 1A San Manuel 14

ST. DAVID

— The Tigers clinched the 1A South title and an automatic bid into the state playoffs with the win over previously unbeaten San Manuel. St. David is 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the 1A South with its last region game of the season this Friday at home against Forth Thomas. The Tigers finished the regular season Oct. 15 in a non-region game against visiting Hayden.

— QB Ryan Gooding, a junior, completed 14 of 19 passes for 306 yards with four TDs and no interceptions.

— RB Talon Haynie, a senior, rushed for 240 yards on 19 carries with two TDs.

— WR/DB Jake Goodman, a senior, caught five passes for 112 yards and two TDs, and he had 10 tackles.

— WR/DB Cody Didion, a senior, had five receptions for 121 yards with two TDs, and he had 10 tackles, seven for loss, including 2.5 sacks.

— LB Brayden Merrill, a senior, tallied 15 tackles, three for loss, including one sack.

SAN MANUEL

— QB Nicolas Vasquez, a sophomore, completed 9 of 17 passes for 215 yards with one TD and no interceptions.

— WR Noah Huerta, a senior, tallied four receptions for 61 yards.

— WR Tony Guisa Jr., a junior, had two receptions for 80 yards.

— CB Noah Huerta, a senior, had eight tackles.

1A Valley Union 56, 1A Ft. Thomas 26

VALLEY UNION

— RB/LB Jace Mitchell, a senior, rushed 15 times for 216 yards and he had 25 tackles and an interception.

— QB Kohan Evans, a sophomore, completed 3 of 6 passes for 60 yards and a TD and rushed for 159 yards on eight carries with two TDs.

— LB Luke Essary, a junior, had 11 tackles.

— DE Will Smith, a junior, also tallied 11 tackles.
