Desert View RB Serge Gboweiah earns Doherty Award Nomination Medallion

Desert View senior running back Serge Gboweiah is one of the recipients of the Week 7 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions as presented by the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club following his performance in the Jaguars’ 46-28 win over previously unbeaten Marana last week.

Gboweiah (pronounced BO-way) is the third player from Southern Arizona to earn the medallion this season, joining Willcox running back Cristian Pando and Marana quarterback Elijah Joplin.

By earning the medallion, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on Dec. 18, where one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award signifying the top player in the state.

The six players in the state recognized for outstanding play during their respective games last week: Gboweiah, Gage Baker (sophomore QB, Paradise Honors); Will Galvan (junior QB, Cactus); AJ Murphy (senior running back, Casteel); Isaiah Savoie (senior running back, Apache Junction); and Brayton Silbor (senior quarterback, Chaparral).  

All six players will receive their Nomination Medallions at an upcoming school event this week.

Details on their individual performances last week are as follows:  

Serge Gboweiah – Desert View RB   

Gboweiah rushed for 315 yards on 24 carries and three TDs in the Jaguars’ win over Marana, helping Desert View to a 4-0 record.

Gage Baker – Paradise Honors QB   

In the first start of his high school career, Baker completed 19 of 26 passes for 401 yards and eight TDs.  He added a 56-yard rushing touchdown in the Panthers’ 61-13 win over Odyssey Institute.  

Will Galvan – Cactus QB  

Galvan completed 19 of 27 passes for 223 yards and a school-record  seven TDs in the Cobras’ 54-6 win over Poston Butte.  

AJ Murphy – Casteel RB  

Murphy ran for a school-record 384 yards on 31 carries, adding five TDs in the Colts’ 47-27 win over Higley.  

Isaiah Savoie – Apache Junction RB  

Baker ran for a school-record 292 yards on 31 carries while recording five TDs in the Prospectors’ 56-31 win over Fountain Hills.  

Brayton Silbor – Chaparral QB 

Silbor, the leading 6A passer in the state after five games, completed 27 of 37 passes for 347 yards and four TDs in the Firebirds’ 42-21 win of O’Connor.
