Bourguet, Lambert earn Doherty Award Nomination Medallions

NOTE: AllSportsTucson.com’s Andy Morales and Javier Morales are two voting members of the Ed Doherty Award sponsored by the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club. The Ed Doherty Award signifies the Arizona high school football player of the year honor.

Salpointe senior quarterback Treyson Bourguet and Empire senior running back/linebacker Jake Lambert each earned an Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallion on Tuesday for their Week 11 performances last Friday.

Bourguet completed 12 of 22 pass attempts for 184 yards and five touchdowns in Salpointe’s 45-7 win over Buena as the Lancers took control of the 5A Southern region with a 2-0 record and 6-2 overall.

Lambert rushed 33 times for 216 yards and touchdowns and added 10 tackles, three for loss, in the Ravens’ 27-7 win over Amphitheater to set up a 4A Gila championship game for Empire (5-4, 3-0) at home against Catalina Foothills (4-4, 2-0 4A Gila) on Friday.

The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club coordinates the Ed Doherty Award nominations.

By earning Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions, the players will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on Dec. 18. One athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award, signifying the state’s player of the year.

About the Ed Doherty Award    

For 35 years, the Ed Doherty Award has been the State of Arizona’s highest individual high school football honor and is awarded annually to the state’s most outstanding high school football player by the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club. The Ed Doherty Award recognizes the player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. The winner of the award epitomizes great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. In addition to on-field performance, the Ed Doherty Award recognizes the well-rounded accomplishments of community involvement, school pride, and academics.
