Mitchell Effing, Turner Washington, Katie Faulk, Halle Morris and Grant Nations earn collegiate recognitions

Mitchell Effing (Big Sky Graphic)

Former Flowing Wells track and field standout Mitchell Effing (NAU) won the men’s long jump at the Big Sky Championships (7.41 meters) and he took fourth place (15.31 meters) in the triple jump to earn Big Sky Freshman of the Year honors.

Former Canyon del Oro thrower Turner Washington won the won the shot put at the NCAA DI Indoor Track & Field Championships with a heave of 21.65m (71-0½). He was undefeated this season. He was named the Athlete of the Year for the West Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Washington is also one of 10 finalists for the Bowerman Award.

Former Marana catcher Katie Faulk, former Canyon del Oro pitcher Halle Morris and former Sabino swimmer Grant Nations were all honored at the Utah Athletic Department’s “All As Reception” held Monday night.

This list will be updated all year in an effort to recognize all former local prep stars who have gone on to achieve either academic and/or athletic awards at the next level. These are not high school awards but collegiate and professional recognitions. NOT CHAMPIONSHIPS. If you are aware of anything I have missed along the way, please let me know. amoralesmytucson@yahoo.com
