Sam Thomas signs training-camp contract with Phoenix Mercury

Imagine the support the Phoenix Mercury will receive from some Arizona fans in Tucson and Phoenix who have grown to respect Sam Thomas as a player and person the last five years.

The Mercury have that opportunity for more fan involvement by giving Thomas a chance to prove herself as an undrafted free agent during their training camp.

She travels tomorrow to Phoenix to start participating in training camp. The season opener for the Mercury is May 6 at the Footprint Center against the Las Vegas Aces.

Thomas announced via Twitter today, “Couldn’t leave AZ, super excited for this opportunity” after the Arizona’s women’s basketball Twitter handle announced the signing.

The Mercury list 17 players on their training camp roster including six players who match Thomas’ size at 6-foot-1 and her skill set. Vivian Gray of Texas Tech is one of them, listed as a guard-forward also signed as an undrafted free agent.

The team, led by first-year coach Vanessa Nygaard, will be cut to 12 players by the start of the season.

Thomas completed her fifth year at Arizona this season after helping lead the Wildcats to the national title game in 2020-21. She is leaving the program as one of its most popular players having started every game of her career from her freshman year to this season — 125 games total.
