  • Sahuaro enters the Al Alexander era as head coach after 13 successful years under Scott McKee, who resigned after last season. Alexander was a long-time Salpointe assistant as part of Dennis Bene’s staff before joining Pat Nugent at Cienega and Mica Mountain the last two seasons as the offensive line coach.
  • Alexander will coach his first game Sahuaro hosts Seton Catholic on Sept. 2. Seton, which was 2-8 last season, has not played a Southern Arizona team since Sabino visited the Chandler school in the 2015 season. The Sabercats won that game 54-7.
  • Sahuaro then plays at rival Sabino on Sept. 9. The Sabercats have won five of the last seven meetings between the eastside schools.
  • The other three non-region games are against Nogales (Sept. 23) and Thatcher (Sept. 30) at home and on the road against Buena (Oct. 7).
  • The Cougars’ 4A Kino schedule includes the first two games on the road against Walden Grove (Oct. 14) and Amphi (Oct. 21), two games at home against Sahuarita (Oct. 28) and Catalina Foothills (Nov. 4) before ending at Rio Rico (Nov. 11).
  • Former Sahuaro offensive line coach Daniel Saenz, who was part of McKee’s staff for 10 years, will make his first return to the school when he coaches Catalina Foothills against the Cougars.
