Sunnyside has advanced to the Intermediate (50/70) state tournament that begins July 7 at Nogales after beating Cactus in two games of the District 12 best-of-three championship series.
Sunnyside beat Cactus 39-4 on Wednesday after winning 18-3 on Tuesday. Both games were at Vista del Prado Park.
Carlos Rodriguez (5 for 5), Ezequiel Lorta (5 for 5) and Josue Epinoza (4 for 4) led Sunnyside’s 26-hit attack.
Rodriguez had six runs, two triples and five RBIs, Lorta had six runs, a double and three RBIs and Espinoza finished with six runs and home run and seven RBIs.
Joshua Valenzuela went 2 for 5 with two home runs and five RBIs, Luis Zazueta was 3 for 5 with four runs and three RBIs and Brody Salgado was 2 for 4 with three runs and four RBIs.
Cactus’ leadoff hitter Gavin Hanson went 2 for 2 with two runs, Michael Sandoval was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Wyatt Blanco had an RBI double and scored a run.
