No. 42: QB Greg Mortensen leads unbeaten St. David to consecutive state title in 1998

GAME SUMMARY: St. David earned a repeat state championship and won the game of unbeatens in a much-anticipated matchup. The teams met in the semifinals the previous year as unbeaten teams.

St. David quarterback Greg Mortensen hit split end Aaron Weimer from the 4-yard line with 6:52 left in the third quarter to put the Tigers (11-0) ahead 34-20. It was the third touchdown pass of the game completed by Mortenson to Weimer.

With 10 minutes remaining in the game, St. David halfback Austyn Judd, who finished with 105 yards on 18 carries, added an insurance touchdown from a yard out.

Mortensen passed for 210 yards on 9-of-15 completions and also ran for 115 yards on 19 carries. He completed his first five passes for 152 yards and a touchdown.

His 27-yard touchdown pass to Weimer on fourth-and-20 gave St. David a 28-22 lead with five seconds left before halftime.

It was the last game for Orme (10-1) at the Class 1A level. The school went to 2A the following year and played 11-player football.

DID YOU KNOW: Mortensen went on to be part of the BYU progam in 2004 after excelling at Phoenix College and Mesa Community College and taking a two-year Mormon mission.  He was a two-time MVP in leading St. David to its back-to-back state titles. He was at the forefront of John Bryant’s program winning 22 straight game over two seasons. He completed 21 touchdown passes as a senior with only three interceptions and ran for 739 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also led the Tigers to a state basketball championship as a junior, scoring 26 points with 18 rebounds in the championship game. Also a member of the state champion 4×100-meter relay team.
