The second Tucson Summer Pro League for Kids since it was made a youth-only summertime event in 2019 comes to a close Saturday with the semifinals, All-Star game and championship at The Gregory School (3231 N Craycroft Rd.).

This is the first championship event for TSPL for Kids since 2019 because of COVID-19 restrictions the last two years.

Corey Williams, a former Arizona basketball player during the Lute Olson era, has conducted this summer event with a community focus since 2004 first involving college-age players.

The co-ed league of players 11-13 (middle-school aged) this summer has included 10 teams with sponsor names affiliated with them.

Most of the participation fees for the youths is covered by sponsors The Bruce Foundation, Picture Rocks HVAC, Window Depot, Ace Hardware, The Moore Law Firm, Crest Insurance, Truly Nolen, the Pascua-Yaqui Tribe, Bruce Baca Real Estate and Casino Del Sol Resort.

Williams’ objective is to give local youths a chance to play summer basketball whereas their families may not be able to afford having their children pay to participate on a traveling club team.

The semifinal schedule:

11 a.m. — Picture Rocks HVAC vs. Crest Insurance

12 p.m. — Moore Law Firm vs. Bruce Foundation

The All-Star Game follows at 1 p.m. and the championship is at 2 p.m.

Admission is free. A concession stand and gift shop with TSPL shirts ($15) and caps ($20) for sale will be available to help Williams and staff with the operation costs of the event.
