Former Catalina basketball standout Jesse Simpson named University of Redlands assistant

Former Catalina standout Jesse Simpson was named assistant coach of the University of Redlands this week. Simpson played at Fitchburg State University and in Spain while serving as an assistant coach at Pusch Ridge until 2021. Simpson served as an assistant coach at Westminster College in Salt Lake City after Pusch Ridge.

The Bulldogs compete at the NCAA Division III level.

Former St. Augustine baseball standouts Alex Gamez and Pabel Martinez are at the next level

Alex Gamez (New Mexico JC) was a utility player with St. Augustine where he batted .408 with 21 RBI while collecting 59 strikeouts on the mound in 37 innings of work as a senior. Gamez joins former Sunnyside standout Gerardo Grijalva on the Thunderbird roster.

Pabel Martinez (Adams State) batted .354 as a senior 12 RBI and 6 doubles. Martinez joins former Tucson standout Orlando Romero, former Rincon/UHS standout Alfredo Villa and former Flowing Wells standout Caleb Raney on the Grizzly roster.

Former Ironwood Ridge and Arizona standout Jaclyn Inclan passes 2,000 career assists

Former Ironwood Ridge setter Jaclyn Inclan picked up over 1,000 career assists with Chicago State. Inclan started out on the University of Arizona Beach team after high school before moving to New Mexico to play indoor where she posted 1,182 assists. She now has 1,390 assists with the Cougars.

Former Tucson High standout Summer Avery retires from professional volleyball

Summer Avery played indoor and beach volleyball at San Jose State and California Baptist after earning Southern Arizona Player of the Year with the Badgers in 2013. Avery went on to play for Lemesos Volleyball in Cyprus (2019-2022) where she also served as a coach. Lemesos was elevated to the first division under Avery’s leadership.

Named one of “Arizona’s Heart & Sol” by KOLD and Casino del Sol, Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014, he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017 and a 2019 AZ Education News recognition. He was a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. He was the first in Arizona to write about high school beach volleyball and high school girls wrestling and his unique perspective can only be found here and on AZPreps365.com. Andy is a Southern Arizona voting member of the Ed Doherty Award, recognizing the top football player in Arizona, and he was named a Local Hero by the Tucson Weekly for 2016. Andy was named an Honorary Flowing Wells Caballero in 2019, became a member of the Sunnyside Los Mezquites Cross Country Hall of Fame in 2021 and he was a member of the Amphi COVID-19 Blue Ribbon Committee. He earned a Distinguished Service Award from Amphitheater and he was recognized by the Sunnyside School District and by Tucson City Councilman Richard Fimbres.
