Sunnyside’s Sergio Vega wins 126-pound title in prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions

Sunnyside High School sophomore Sergio Vega capped a dominant 7-0 run through the 126-pound division of the regionally-prominent Reno Tournament of Champions with a championship victory Saturday night over Jacob Carson of Pleasant Grove (Utah) High School.

Vega beat Carson by an 8-4 decision at the Reno Events Center in Reno, Nev.

The victory followed six previous wins, five by fall and one by technical fall.

A son of former Sunnyside state champion wrestler Danny Vega, Sergio is coming off an unbeaten season (40-0) en route to a state championship at 113 pounds last season.

Sunnyside’s Audrey Jimenez, a world-class female wrestler, won her first three matches in the 106-pound class against male competition before losing in the quarterfinals.

120 pounds: Sunnyside’s James Williams-Armstrong finished fourth.

126: Sunnyside’s Sergio Vega, champion.

132: Sunnyside’s Carlitos Stanton, fifth.

144: Sahuarita’s Gabriel Gallardo, eighth.

157: Sahuarita’s Julian Prieto, eighth.

165: Sunnyside’s Mike Avelar, fourth.
