D1 Boys Wrestling: Sunnyside dynasty earns 36th state championship

PHOENIX — Sunnyside’s boys wrestling team dynasty, one of the most successful high school programs in any sport in the country, earned its sixth consecutive state title Saturday night under coach Anthony Leon and its 36th overall behind seven individual champions.

Leon has coached seven state championship teams at Sunnyside overall in his 12th season as head coach.

The Blue Devil champions in the D1 competition Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum:

120 pounds: Senior James Armstrong (four-time state champion)

126 pounds: Sophomore Sergio Vega (repeat state champion and unbeaten in his career at 77-0)

132 pounds: Sophomore Carlos Stanton (repeat state champion)

144 pounds: Junior Cristian Rivera (repeat state champion)

157 pounds: Senior Job Lee (repeat state champion)

165 pounds: Senior Mike Avelar (repeat state champion)

175 pounds: Sophomore Nicholas Pina
