CANYON DEL ORO WINS CHRIS MOON CLASSIC

Canyon del Oro beat Sahuaro 11-6 Saturday afternoon to win the championship of the Chris Moon Memorial Tournament held at Cherry Field. The Dorados went 4-1 at the tournament with the loss coming against Sahuaro on Thursday.

The Dorados scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and two more in the second but Sahuaro scored four in the top of the third to cut the lead down to 6-4. Canyon del Oro got two back in the bottom half of the fourth and two more in the fifth to held hold off the Cougars. Sahuaro scored one in the fifth and another n the sixth for the 11-6 final. Sahuaro is 3-2 on the year.

Michael Jones went 2-3 with 3 RBI on 3 triples to lead the Dorados. Chris Humphreys went 3-4, Jacob Charlson went 2-2 with an RBI, Adrien Marquez went 2-3 with an RBI and a double, Sam Martinez went 2-4 with an RBI and Lucas Casey had an RBI. Freshman Dillon Weidner picked up the win.

Jacob Solis went 2-2 with 2 RBI to lead the Cougars, Francisco Sablan had 2 RBI, Axel Ledesma had an RBI, Justin Payne had an RBI and Jayden Fallwell went 1-2. Sahuaro opens up the regular season on Tuesday under new head coach Andres Hackman on Tuesday with Ironwood Ridge coming in. Hackman graduated from Empire in 2015.

Ironwood Ridge went 3-1 at the Cowboy Up Classic and the Nighthawks are coached by first-year skipper Tyler Teadt, who graduated from O’Connor in 2005.

Cienega (3-2) will visit Canyon del Oro on Tuesday. The Bobcats also competed at the Chris Moon Memorial.

SALPOINTE HELD ON TO BEAT CDO 5-4 TO WIN THE DORADO CLASSIC

Salpointe beat Canyon del Oro 5-4 on Saturday to win the Dorado Softball Classic held at Lincoln Park. The Lancers went 8-0 on the week and the Dorados went 7-1.

Anyssa Wild went 2-2 with a triple and 2 RBI for Salpointe, Jae Castillo went 2-3 with an RBI, Taiya Teixeira went 2-4 and Gianna Payne, Alma Garcia had an RBI and Allie Hayes picked up the win. For CDO, MKenna Stohlmann went 2-3 with an RBI and a double, Allee Noble had a triple and she went 2-4, Malayah Rentaria had an RBI and Amelia Streuber collected 7 strikeouts.

The Dorados will host Cienega (1-0) on Tuesday. Former Sabino and current Canadian National Team standout Kelsey Harshman is in her first year coaching the Bobcats. Salpointe will host Catalina Foothills on March 1. Longtime youth and high school coach Dean Misenhimer is on his first year with the Falcons.
