Hi Wildcat fans!

This week I wanted to highlight a friend of mine and one of Tucson’s talented softball players – Sydney Gray. She is from Tucson, went to Sabino High School, and played club ball for Arizona Desert Thunder. I played club ball on the Arizona Cats with her older sister, Carly Gray. She comes from such a great family and is just overall a great person. I wanted everyone to get to know her a little bit better because she represents Tucson with pride.

I asked Sydney what her favorite part about Nebraska was and she said, “My favorite parts about Nebraska are the culture and that it has all four seasons. All the people are so supportive, genuine, and nice no matter where you go, making you feel welcomed.” Sydney has a great support system, and she acknowledges that her entire family, friends, and coaches have made an impact on her life, and they are a big reason for the success that she has had so far. She mentioned that she loves dogs, and her dog Harley will be at the games. He is a Miniature Australian Labradoodle. Sydney is studying Finance with a minor in Management at Nebraska and has hopes of owning her own business one day. There’s not a ton of free time being a student athlete, but Sydney has some things she enjoys doing. “When I don’t have softball/school, I like to hang out with my friends by going to concerts, having movie nights, going to coffee shops, bowling, going on walks, and shopping.”

Sydney was so excited to come back home and play in front of her family and friends. “Playing on the field where I grew up dreaming to be one day and with all my family and friends in the stadium. The feeling is quite surreal, and I am just so grateful that I get this opportunity.” As much as she loves Nebraska, she misses a few things from Tucson. “Some of the things I miss the most about Tucson are the beautiful mountains, warm weather, Eegees, and In n Out. I have so much more appreciation for them and the warmer weather. Although I have gotten used to snow, I still like the warm sunny days in Tucson better.”

We all have our reasons for why we do the things we do. I asked Sydney why she plays softball and here’s what she said, “I have played softball ever since I was 7 years old, after watching my sister play before me. I wanted to be like my sister and compete with a team. To this day, I play softball because it allows me to use my athletic ability, be competitive, face challenges to learn new lessons, have an amazing group of friends/sisters, and be surrounded by supportive and hardworking people all day long. Playing softball also allows me to let loose and go have fun no matter what else is going on.”

I am so proud of Sydney for the player she is on the field and the person she has become off the field. There are so many great things to come from her in the future.
