Pima softball sweeps Mesa behind production of Tucson High grad Camila Zepeda

The Pima College softball team scored 28 runs in its doubleheader sweep against visiting Mesa on Saturday.

The Aztecs (23-14, 19-9 in ACCAC) have won four consecutive games and eight out of the last 10 games.

He had plenty of hitting standouts, chief among them freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson High grad). She closed out the day going 4 for 5 with five RBIs, three runs and three walks.

Sophomore Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic) went 3 for 5 with four RBIs, four runs and two walks. Fellow sophomore Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde) was 3 for 6 with four RBIs and three runs. Sophomore Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro) and freshman Alexis Tsosie-Hood picked up the wins in the circle.

Game 1: Pima 9, Mesa 4: The Aztecs fell behind 4-0 heading to the bottom of the second inning but rallied off nine unanswered runs to take the first game.

Munoz drove in freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita) and sophomore Stephanie Tapia on a double to cut Mesa’s lead to 4-2.

The Aztecs scored four runs in the third inning to take the lead. Castro tied the game with a two-run double to bring around sophomore Alejandra Castro and freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson). Two batters later, Casadei was clutch with a two-run single to score Zylinski-Wrobel and Castro as the Aztecs took a 6-4 lead.

Zepeda added insurance in the sixth inning with a two-run double to plate Munoz and sophomore Analisa Gomez (Ricncon/University). Zepeda scored the final run of the game off of Alejandra Castro’s RBI single.

Zepeda went 1 for 2 with two RBIs, a run and two walks. Munoz finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs, a run and a walk. Castro was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run while Casadei went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Zylinski-Wrobel drew two walks and scored two runs.

Castro (8-4) picked up the win as she pitched a complete game, giving up four runs (four earned) on seven hits with two walks on 89 pitches.

Game 2: Pima 19, Mesa 0 (5 innings): The Aztecs left no doubt from the get-go as they scored nine runs in the first inning and 10 runs in the third inning to seal the run-rule win and doubleheader sweep.

Zepeda drove in the first run of the game in the first inning with an RBI single to score Munoz. She capped off the barrage with an RBI double to plate Munoz again and make it 9-0. She drew a bases loaded walk in the third inning and made it 13-0 when she scored off Chacon’s two-run single.

Freshman Madison Fillman-Moreno (Sabino) hit a two-run RBI single in the first inning and later scored on an error to make it 7-0. She also hit an RBI single in the third inning.

Casadei hit a single in the first inning and stole home to make it 8-0. She hit a two-run single in the third inning and also scored two runs.

Zepeda was a flawless 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs while Chacon went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and a run.

Fillman-Moreno closed out the game going 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs. Munoz hit a two-run double in the third and along with Casadei, they each finished with two RBIs and three runs scored. Alejandra Castro was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs. Zylinski-Wrobel, for the second straight game, scored two runs and drew two walks.

Tsosie-Hood (5-2) got the win after she pitched a five-inning shutout, giving up five hits with four strikeouts on 53 pitches.

The Aztecs are back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday when they play No. 7-ranked Phoenix College (Division II). First game starts at 1 p.m.
