Pima College men earn NJCAA Region I team championship

The Pima College men’s track & field team earned its second NJCAA Division I, Region I Team Championship in three years on Thursday at Mesa Community College.

The Aztecs captured the championship with a team score of 273.5. Mesa came very close with 273 points to finish second. Central Arizona placed third with a score of 142.5.

The NJCAA Division I national meet will be in Hobbs, N.M., from May 18-20.

Pima captured four more individual championships on Thursday and finished with a total of seven individual titles.

Sophomore Nathan Jones claimed the region title in the discus with a personal-best mark of 44.29 meters (145-feet, 3-inches) earning 10 team points. Jones also scored another eight team points after he placed second in the shot put at 14.78 meters (48-6).

Freshman Abraham Valenzuela (Palo Verde grad) scored a region title in the 1,500 meters, fighting back in the final stretch to take the lead and claim the top spot with a personal-best time of 3:51.01. He won the race by 0.6 seconds.

Sophomore Trey Tintinger won his region championship in the high jump after he cleared a jump of 1.97 meters (6-5.50).

The 4×100 relay team of Jacob Rosales (Walden Grove), Tristan Spalding (Palo Verde), Prince Conteh and Broden Cahoon claimed first place with a national qualifying time and personal-best time of 41.08.

Freshman Kaden Cockrell took second place in the triple jump with a mark of 14.47 meters (47-5.75). He earned eight team points for the Aztecs.

Freshman Brett Wynn tied for second place in the high jump with a personal-best mark of 1.92 meters (6-3.50).

The 4×400 relay team of Spalding, Cahoon, sophomore Nathan Plant and sophomore Orion Barger (Canyon del Oro) took second place in the race with a time of 3:15.46.

Sophomore Joel Gardner (Ironwood Ridge) was second in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 14:42.56.

Other finishes that earned team points:

Spalding – third in 400 meters 47.61 (6 points); third in 200 meters 21.67 (6 points).

Johnathon Lane (Walden Grove) – third in the 5,000-meters 14.49.44.

Barger fourth in 400 meters 47.97 (5 points).

Brett Wynn fourth in triple jump 14.47 meters (47-5.75) (5 points)

Rosales fourth in 100 meters 10.77 (5 points); sixth in 200 meters 22.12 (3 points).

Gardner (Ironwood Ridge) – fourth in 1,500 meters 3:54.65 (5 points)

Anthony Avila — fourth in discus 38.23 meters (125-5) (5 points); seventh in shot put 13.29 meters (43-7.25) (2 points)

Jesus Quintero – tied for fourth in high jump 1.77 meters (5-9.75) (5 points); sixth in 400 hurdles 56.17 (3 points); eighth in 110 hurdles 15.54 (1 point).

Joshua Bowen – fifth in Shot Put 13.73 meters (45-0.50) (4 points); sixthj in Discus 37.23 meters (122-1) (3 points).

Valenzuela — fifth in 5,000 meters 15:00.67 (4 points).

Jace Boren (Cienega) – sixth in triple jump 13.68 meters (44-10.75) (3 points)

Dillon Arvayo (Mountain View) – fifth in high jump 1.77 meters (5-9.75) (3.5 points); seventh in triple jump 13.46 meters (44-2) (2 points)

Nicholas Patterson – seventh in 110 hurdles 15.44 (2 points); eighth in 400 hurdles 56.87 (1 point)

Nathan Plant – seventh in 800 meters 1:57.08 (2 points).
