The 3A state championship game Wednesday night between No. 2 Empire and No. 1 Sabino at Hillenbrand Stadium was postponed in the second inning because of a heavy rainfall causing unsafe field conditions.

The resumption of the game will be scheduled at a site other than Hillenbrand at a date and time to be determined, according to the AIA. The game will shift away from Hillenbrand because Arizona’s regular grounds crew is no longer on campus because of the completion of the Wildcats’ season.

The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. but rain forced its postponement to Wednesday.

Empire was leading 1-0 with one out in the top of the second inning with runners on first and second base.

The Ravens took the lead after Callista Drawbaugh led off the game with a triple and scored when the next batter, Abigail Zsitvay hit into a fielder’s choice groundout.

Sabino put runners on first and second base with no outs in the bottom of the first but Kendall Freidinger worked out of the jam with three straight outs, including two strikeouts.
