Sunnyside wrestlers Mike Avelar & James Armstrong sign college letters of intent

The Sunnyside High School wrestling dynasty, which has earned 36 state championships, including a current run of six straight years, is adding two more wrestlers who will go on to the collegiate level.

Mike Avelar is headed to the Air Force Academy and James Armstrong to Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Avelar and Armstrong were honored at Sunnyside’s gym on Friday in a signing ceremony.

Avelar (165 pounds) was a repeat title winner this year and Armstrong (120 pounds) capped a four-year run as a state champion.

They join a growing list of Blue Devils who have advanced to wrestle in college.

The list, all coached by Anthony Leon at Sunnyside since he was hired in 2011, includes Roman Bravo-Young (Penn State), Jesse Ybarra and Sebastian Robles (Iowa), Anthony Echemendia (Iowa State), Rico Robles (Arizona Christian), Rene Fragoso (ASU) and Jaime Rivera Jr. (West Point).
