Today: Kevin Woodman and Michael Luke

We introduced our readers to all the local sports anchors and reporters responsible for making Friday Nights come alive in your living room and we now focus on what I listen to as I make my way around to the various sporting events not only on Friday nights but every night.

And you should too.

Kevin Woodman and Michael Luke are co-hosts of the “Kevin and Mike Show” everyday on Sports Radio 1290 AM from 3-6 p.m.

Follow them on Twitter: @sportsradio1290, @Kevin1290, @ironmikeluke

1290 is not only the official radio home of the University of Arizona Wildcats but the home of the most informative and most popular sports talk in Southern Arizona.

Kevin is a natural. John Schuster of the Tucson Weekly accurately described Woodman as, “…the radio professional’s worst nightmare.”

“Woodman isn’t the radio professional’s worst nightmare because he’s a novice. He’s the professional’s worst nightmare because he’s a natural,” Schuster added in one of his “Media Watch” reviews of the 1290 radio show.

It is a shocker that Kevin had no experience prior to hosting the show. Unlike most media personalities, Kevin is a very private person but, also unlike most media professionals, Kevin doesn’t need to sit and memorize copy or rehearse a 15-second blurb. He just says what needs to be said and when he says it you feel like you are having a beer in a pub somewhere with a friend.

Mike was the guy behind the glass during the “In the House” phase of the show when Rob Lantz and former Wildcat and NFL lineman Glenn Parker were co-hosting along with Kevin.

Like Kevin, Mike is also a natural although he has a media background. I respectfully consider Mike a “sports nerd” because he has knowledge on almost every stat, athlete or team that you can throw at him. Kevin does stump him on occasion on athletes and events prior to 1980 but that is part of the friendly banter that the listening audience enjoys.

I know I enjoy the show and you will too. Weekly guests include Brad Allis of wildcatsportsreport.com, Jason Scheer of WildcatAuthority.com and University of Arizona Athletic Director Greg Byrne. My brother Javier Morales (AllSportsTucson.com) makes occasional appearances and I even get to call in now and then.

In their own words:

“Kevin Woodman was born and raised in Huntington Beach, CA and moved to Tucson in 2004. He has worked in sales in the technology field for over 25 years. He got his start in radio after Glenn Parker asked him to fill in for a day for his regular co-host. He’s been doing the afternoon show on 1290 since 2006 and prior to 1290 he had no radio experience. He’s single, reads too much, knows way more about 80’s music than is probably healthy or normal, he loves to surf, cook and is a beer and wine geek.”

“Currently the co-host of the Kevin and Mike Show and Assistant Program Director for Sportsradio1290, Michael Luke is a lifelong Tucsonan, University of Arizona graduate, and Arizona and Nebraska athletics sports nut.

When not talking about sports, he plays basketball and dreams about different sporting scenarios.”
