Unbeaten Sunnyside Major Little League Advances to State Championship at Kingman


Sunnyside continued its unbeaten run of seven games in the district and state tournaments by defeating Red Mountain 6-2 in a winners bracket final at Kingman’s Southside Park on Saturday night.

Sunnyside advances to the championship game Monday at 6 p.m. It will play the winner of the elimination bracket final between Red Mountain and Queen Creek. Those teams play Sunday at 6 p.m. Either Red Mountain or Queen Creek must beat Sunnyside twice for the championship.

Queen Creek eliminated Sierra Vista 5-3 on Saturday night.

Sunnyside utilized three pitchers — Michael Muniz, Juan Abril and Izaiah Moraga — to hold Red Mountain to two unearned runs on eight hits in the six-inning game.

Muniz started and went two innings allowing four hits with one strikeout and one walk. Abril has pitched 2 1/3 innings with two hits allowed and three strikeouts with no walks. Moraga went 1 1/3 innings allowing two hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Pinch-hitter Jorge Zazueta hit a home run in his only at-bat for Sunnyside. Miguel Siqueiros went 2 for 3 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Damian Lorta was 1 for 3 with a double, run and RBI.
