Sunnyside wrestling great Roman Bravo-Young advances to Big Ten championship

Sunnyside High School alum Roman Bravo-Young, a 133-pound wrestler at Penn State, advanced to the championship of the Big Ten meet Saturday with an 8-3 decision over Chris Cannon of Northwestern at University Park, Pa.

The semifinal win followed a 9-3 decision over Jacob Rundell of Purdue at University Park, Pa.

Bravo-Young, the No. 1 wrestler in the 133-pound class in the meet, automatically qualified for the NCAA tournament by reaching the Big Ten semifinals. He is 8-0 this season.

Bravo-Young will face Iowa’s Austin DeSanto in the title match. He defeated DeSanto 3-2 last year to reach the championship, in which he lost to Northwestern’s Sebastian Rivera 7-2.

DeSanto outlasted Illinois’ Lucas Byrd with a 5-4 decision to reach the title match.

The championship round of the Big Ten meet begins Sunday at 2 p.m. Tucson time.

Bravo-Young went 182-0 over four years at Sunnyside, winning four straight state titles in the process.

He is attempting to win his first Big Ten title. He is 52-9 in his junior season with the Nittany Lions. He has won 27 of his last 29 matches.

“I’d rather win NCAA titles than a Big Ten title, so I’m not even worried,” Bravo-Young told reporters during the week. “Whatever happens, happens, and then I gotta be ready for the big show.”
