No. 9 Arizona sweeps four-game series against Stanford

After taking the first three games of the four-game series, Arizona was looking to sweep Stanford on Saturday.

The Wildcats did just that in a gritty 2-0 game to improve to 22-5 and extend their current winning streak to eight games.

In the first game pitcher, Alyssa Denham tossed her third career no-hitter in a 9-0 five-inning run-rule game.

Denham was once again in the circle for Arizona. Although she didn’t pitch another no-hitter, she was nothing short of spectacular, tossing a complete-game shutout on 87 pitches, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out three batters.

Arizona’s lineup struggled to get things going against pitcher Alana Vawter. The Wildcats capitalized on three Cardinal errors and had four hits for two runs.

The Wildcats outscored Stanford 22-5 in the series while racking up 32 hits. The pitching for Arizona was led by Denham, who pitched 12 innings giving up four hits and zero runs in two starts.

Arizona will return to Hillenbrand Stadium on Friday and Saturday to play in the Bear Down Fiesta, with two games against New Mexico State (Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m.) and another against Team Mexico (Saturday at 3 p.m.).

Team Mexico has former Wildcats Taylor McQuillin and Danielle O’Toole as they prepare for the Tokyo Olympics.
