Detroit Lions place Stanley Berryhill III on active roster

Look for former Mountain View High School and Arizona receiver Stanley Berryhill III to be directed by ex-Wildcat David Fipp on special teams Sunday when the Detroit Lions host the Miami Dolphins.

Berryhill, signed to Detroit’s practice squad last week after two weeks on the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad, was activated to the Lions’ 53-player roster on Thursday.

He reportedly will play on special teams, potentially as a returner for Fipp, who is the Lions’ special teams coordinator. Berryhill may also see time on the field Sunday helping Detroit’s injury-plagued receiver unit.

Fipp played on special teams and as a safety for Dick Tomey at Arizona from 1994-97. He was the Philadelphia Eagles’ special teams coordinator when the Eagles recently won the Super Bowl with Nick Foles as quarterback.

Berryhill, a former walk-on at Arizona, led the Wildcats last season with 83 catches for 749 yards and a touchdown. He also returned 19 punts while also serving as a gunner on punt coverage.

He signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in April and remained at their training camp until their 53-player roster was determined Aug. 31.
