Arizona’s basketball future was showcased Wednesday night when Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei wing player Stanley Johnson went against Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco combo guard Tyler Dorsey.
Johnson’s top-ranked team was tested by St. John Bosco on its home court, trailing by seven points at halftime. But the Monarchs forced 12 turnovers in the second half and won 71-62.
Johnson, a Class of 2014 five-star Arizona recruit, had 21 points and M.J. Cage added 17 points and 14 rebounds. Daniel Hamilton led St. John Bosco with 22 points and Dorsey, a Class of 2015 five-star recruit who committed to Arizona last week, had 20. Note: The video above is when Johnson and Dorsey were teammates of an AAU team last summer.
“I thought we competed and made big strides tonight,” St. John Bosco Coach Derrick Taylor told the Los Angeles Times. “They’re just real good.”
St. John Bosco is 11-6 and Mater Dei improved to 17-0. Entering the game, Dorsey led St. John Bosco with 20.5 points a game while Johnson topped Mater Dei with 26.2. Johnson also led the Monarchs with 2.8 steals per game.
Mater Dei plays at Anaheim (Calif.) Servite Friday before traveling to the Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass., where it will play against Philadelphia Neumann-Goretti on Monday. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU at 2:30 p.m. Tucson time.
