Arizona coach Sean Miller made the comment after last night’s 67-65 victory over Oregon that he’s glad the Wildcats won because now they have eight Pac-12 games remaining instead of nine in the regular season.
It is a bit early but the magic number for the Wildcats (9-1 in the Pac-12) to clinch the regular-season title over second-place UCLA (6-3) stands at 7.
Arizona beat the Bruins in their only game scheduled game this season. Therefore, with the head-to-head advantage, the Wildcats must lose three times in their remaining eight games while the Bruins must win their remaining nine games without a loss.
The same goes for Cal, which slipped to 6-4 with its loss at home to Stanford on Wednesday. The Golden Bears would win the tie-breaker if Arizona lost three times and they ran the table. Cal visits Arizona on Feb. 26.
The three other 6-4 teams — ASU, Colorado and Stanford — have all lost to Arizona but have another game scheduled against the Wildcats. They must hope Arizona loses three times (including to them) while they win the rest of their games to create a tie-breaker scenario.
That’s highly unlikely because ASU, Colorado and Stanford each play each other in the last eight games of the season.

Translation: Arizona has the decided edge for the regular-season Pac-12 title. But as the Wildcats discovered last night, every game will be a challenge without injured starter Brandon Ashley. Nothing is guaranteed.
The Pac-12 has six teams in the RPI Top 50 as of this morning. Oregon actually moved up from No. 44 to No. 40 after playing the No. 2 Wildcats. The other highly-rated teams: No. 19 UCLA, No. 26 Colorado, No. 37 Stanford and No. 39 ASU. Cal is No. 51.
ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi has all six going to the NCAA tournament. The seeds: Arizona (No. 1), UCLA (No. 6), Stanford (No. 9), Cal (No. 10), Colorado (No. 10) and ASU (No. 11).
