Cal’s 80-76 overtime victory at Washington State tonight prevented another disappointing loss for the only team to defeat the No. 2 Arizona Wildcats this season.
It also allowed the Pac-12 to avoid the concern — at least temporarily — that the league may drop to five NCAA tournament hopefuls.
The Golden Bears (16-8 overall and 7-4 in Pac-12) already lost to USC (10-13 and 1-9) in Los Angeles. A loss to Washington State (9-15 and 2-10) in Pullman would have been devastating to their postseason hopes.
With the victory — only its second in the last six games (the other being the upset over Arizona) — Cal is now in a three-way tie for third place in the Pac-12 with ASU and Colorado.
ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi projects six conference teams to make the NCAA tournament at this time, including Cal as a No. 10 seed. The others: Arizona (No. 1 seed), UCLA (No. 6), Stanford (No. 9), ASU (No. 10) and Colorado (No. 10).
Oregon is in the “Next Four Out” category after the “First Four Out”.
