HOW WILL ARIZONA’S THREE-POINT DEFENSE FARE AGAINST OREGON’S SHOOTERS?
The Ducks have a propensity of shooting the three-pointer. They have made 51 three-pointers in their six-game winning streak (8.5 per game). By comparison, Arizona has made 51 in its last 10 games. Oregon’s Joseph Young, Mike Moser and Jason Calliste are relentless in shooting from beyond the arc. They combine for 251 three-point attempts in Pac-12 games and have made 101 of them (40.2 percent). Arizona’s top-three from beyond the arc — Nick Johnson, Gabe York and T.J. McConnell — have attempted 198 in conference games and have made 69 (34.8 percent). Arizona leads the Pac-12 in three-point field goal percentage defense (30.4 percent). Oregon is fourth in three-point field goal percentage (38.5).
WHO WILL TAKE BETTER CARE OF THE BALL?
The game will feature the two best ball-handlers in the Pac-12 — McConnell and Oregon’s Johnathon Loyd — in terms of taking care of the ball. McConnell leads the Pac-12 and ranks 13th nationally with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.05 (168 assists and only 58 turnovers). Loyd is next with a ratio of 2.65 (143 assists and 54 turnovers). Since posting a season-high six turnovers at ASU on Feb. 14, McConnell has recorded 34 assists with only four turnovers in Arizona’s current five-game winning streak. By comparison, in Steve Kerr’s junior season of 1985-86, the previous best caretaker of the ball in Arizona history had a ratio of 2.65 (135 assists and 51 turnovers). Arizona’s execution is a far cry from the last three seasons when a player other than the starting point guard led the Wildcats in assists — shooting guard Nick Johnson last year, small forward Solomon Hill in 2011-12 and shooting guard Kyle Fogg in 2010-11.

CLASSIC MATCHUP OF POTENT OFFENSE VS. SHUTDOWN DEFENSE
Entering this week’s games, Oregon was atop the Pac-12 scoring 82.9 points per game. Arizona was No. 1 in scoring defense (58.5). The Wildcats have not allowed an opponent to score 80 points or more this season. In fact, only two teams have eclipsed the 70-point mark against Arizona — UCLA in Arizona’s 79-75 win on Jan. 9 and Michigan the Wildcats 72-70 victory on Dec. 14. Both games were on the road. This is the first year in the 41-year history of McKale Center that an opponent did not score at least 70 points in a game. ASU had the most points in Tucson in Arizona’s 91-68 win on Jan. 16. When was the last time an opponent did not score at least 80 points against Arizona in a season? Through my extensive research, I discovered that you must go way back to 1950-51 during Fred A. Enke’s 24-6 season. Dayton had the most points against Arizona that season in the Wildcats’ 74-68 loss in the postseason NIT at New York City. Lute Olson’s first team in 1983-84 came close with San Diego State the only opponent to eclipse the 80-point mark. The Aztecs beat Arizona 90-80 that season. The Wildcats came close again only two years ago with ASU the only opponent to score 80 or more. The Sun Devils beat Arizona 87-80 in Tempe.
