This year’s countdown to tipoff includes an overall look at the best play in Arizona Wildcats history, which will be determined in the days leading up to tipoff. Today marks 11 days until Arizona starts its 2014-15 season against Mount St. Mary’s on Nov. 14 at McKale Center. Along with the mentioning of the top plays, the countdown will once again display the top players who wore the number that corresponds with the day. The best play will be determined through a vote of readers in a bracket:

NOTE: In a first-round matchup, Nick Johnson’s game-saving blocked shot against San Diego State in 2012 topped Bob Elliott’s 35-foot buzzer shot that beat Kansas State in 1973. Johnson’s play will go against Sean Elliott’s clutch three-pointer over Duke’s Danny Ferry in Arizona’s win over Duke in 1989. Elliott’s shot topped Kenny Lofton’s highlight-reel dunk against Oregon in 1988 in the first round.
Why vote for Nick Johnson’s game-saving blocked shot vs. San Diego State in 2012: Rare does a defensive play make a best-plays list such as this series provides, but an athletic display trumps everything. Johnson, the best pure athlete to wear an Arizona basketball uniform, gave Wildcat fans a gift on Christmas Day 2012 by displaying what his athleticism can provide. When San Diego State’s Chase Tapley curled around a screen and found a wide-open lane to the basket on the final possession of the 2012 Diamond Head Classic title game, Arizona needed a Christmas gift to preserve its undefeated record. Saint Nick — Johnson — provided that with a swooping block shot from behind Tapley in the waning seconds. Arizona became 12-0 for the first time since the 1987-88 Final Four season.
Why vote for Sean Elliott’s clutch three-pointer against Duke in 1989: The national TV game against Duke and Mike Krzyzewski did not faze Elliott, a senior, as he dribbled the ball up the court with one minute remaining and the game tied at 70. The crowd of 18,196 at The Meadowlands in New Jersey stood in anticipation of what Elliott might do next isolated against fellow All-American Danny Ferry of Duke. Elliott, only 5 of 20 shots at that point, pulled up for a three-point shot on top of the key, surprising Ferry, whose reaction to extend high toward Elliott’s release was too late. Elliott shot the ball at his zenith. It swished in to put Arizona ahead 73-70 with 53 seconds remaining. His two foul shots, in a one-and-one situation with 18 seconds left, gave the Wildcats the points that would make the difference in the 77-75 victory.
