Notes about Arizona’s No. 17 ranking in the AP Top 25 poll released yesterday after the Wildcats beat Colorado 38-20 on Saturday:

Not impressed: Seven voters did not move Arizona up in the rankings after their 18-point win over Colorado (the Wildcats were favored by 16). One, Logan Lowery of the Northeast (Miss.) Daily Journal, actually dropped Arizona one spot in his rankings from No. 21 to No. 22. He was the only voter that dropped Arizona. But then again he is one of only four voters who have not ranked Arizona in a polling week after the Wildcats upset then-No. 2 Oregon.

Not worthy of ranking: For the second straight week, Steve Nulph of the Laramie (Wyo.) Boomerang has Arizona unranked despite the Wildcats’ 7-2 record. Ahead of the Wildcats in his poll are two-loss teams from the weak ACC — Clemson (No. 12) and Georgia Tech (No. 24). A Minnesota team from the weak Big Ten is also ranked No. 23 in Nulph’s poll with a 7-2 record.

Substitute voter: Harold Gutmann, formerly of the Durham (N.C.) Herald-Sun, relinquished his vote last week in the AP Top 25 to Scott Hamilton of the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal because Gutmann moved West to Stanford where his wife was hired. Gutmann had Arizona ranked No. 21 in his last poll last week. Hamilton has Arizona at No. 18 in his first poll, so technically, Arizona moved up three spots in the North Carolina balloting.

What Michigan media bias? For the second consecutive week, Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press ranks the team of former Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez the highest in the AP Top 25. Sharp’s ballot has Arizona at No. 12, two spots up from where he had Arizona last week.

For Cripe’s sake: Arizona jumped the highest in the poll of Chad Cripe of the Idaho Statesman from the previous week. Cripe ranked Arizona up seven spots to No. 16 after having the Wildcats at No. 23 last week. Five voters who did not have Arizona in the Top 20 last week kept the Wildcats below No. 20. Cripe was more impressed with Arizona than those guys.
