The last time Arizona’s basketball team played a game, the Wildcats’ football team was in Tucson practicing, still eight days away from playing in the Fiesta Bowl.

That seems like an eternity ago.

Arizona has smarted since losing its first game Dec. 23 against UNLV, a 71-67 decision in Las Vegas. It will resume its season tomorrow against ASU in the Pac-12 opener for the arch-rivals. Christmas and New Year’s have come in between the 12-day break so at least the festivities cured the holiday blues after the loss to the Running Rebels.

This is the Wildcats’ seventh stretch of at least 10 days without a game in the regular season since the program joined the Pac-10 in 1978. Arizona’s record is 6-0 in the previous long stretches without games.

The longest spell without games was in the 1990-91 season when Lute Olson’s team followed a loss at LSU on Dec. 8 with a victory over Providence on Dec. 23.

The No. 2 Wildcats were humbled by LSU and Shaquille O’Neal (29 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots) in that 92-82 loss. Arizona bounced back to beat the Friars 99-87 in McKale Center 15 days later despite allowing Eric Murdock to score 45 points.
