At places like Alabama, Ohio State and now Oregon, fans do not expect anything less than at least 11 wins and a national title.
At Arizona, they are reluctant to think such extravagant thoughts, especially with the program yet to win an outright Pac-12 title.
Did last year’s flirtation with a possible berth in the inaugural College Football Playoff spoil some Arizona fans? Just think, if the Wildcats upset Oregon in the Pac-12 title game — beating the mighty Ducks twice in one season — they likely would have advanced to college football’s version of the Final Four with an 11-2 record.
Oregon routed Arizona and the Wildcats followed that with a defeat at the hands of Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. At least Arizona qualified for a BCS bowl, an incomprehensible thought entering the season, only Rich Rodriguez’s third in Tucson. Arizona finished 10-4 with a Pac-12 South title.
Now where does Arizona’s program stand with Arizona’s fans in terms of expectations?
I polled the Arizona Football Chat Facebook page these questions earlier this week: What will Arizona’s win total be at season’s end? What is the minimum they would be fine with?
A total of 15 fans responded. The final tally:
The average expected amount of wins equaled last year’s total, 10.
The average minimum accepted victories is 8.4.
So a 7-6 record or less will cause some unrest in Tucson.
