[tps_title]Big plays a key for potent Arizona offense[/tps_title]
As was noted at this site this week, one reason why Arizona has lost three straight games to UCLA and Jim Mora is because of a lack of big plays.
The longest running play in Arizona’s three-game losing streak to UCLA: A 24-yard gain by Ka’Deem Carey in 2013.
The longest passing play: A 36-yard pass from Matt Scott to Austin Hill in 2012. No other passing play was longer than 21 yards.
Last year, in the lackluster 17-7 loss to the Bruins, Arizona’s longest running play was only 15 yards by Terris Jones-Grigsby. Its longest pass was a 17-yard connection from Anu Solomon to David Richards.
That kind of production, or lack thereof, does not symbolize the big-play capability of Arizona’s offense so far this season.
Arizona leads all FBS schools with 15 scrimmage plays of 30-plus yards (10 rushing and five passing). The Wildcats have 23 offensive plays of 20-plus yards to date, an average of 7.7 such plays per game. A total of 10 players have a 20-plus-yard run or reception this season.
