Arizona’s helmet is not filling up with stickers they way the Wildcats may have wanted this season.

Only two were earned in the 49-3 loss at Washington — less than five penalties and achieving five possessions of eight plays or more.

Even those stickers are deceiving.

Arizona had four penalties, a strength of Rich Rodriguez’s team this season, but the game was practically over by the third quarter. Penalties were far from being significant.

The five possessions of eight plays or more resulted in only a first-quarter field goal by Casey Skowron. The other four such possessions finished with two punts and two turnovers on downs.

Arizona has only 10 helmet stickers earned in its three Pac-12 road games this season and seven of them were against Pac-12 South cellar-dweller Colorado. Stanford and Washington overwhelmed the Wildcats.

The Wildcats go on the road again Saturday to play a USC team that is playing its best football of the season, finally free from the distraction of fired coach Steve Sarkisian.

With Arizona’s numerous injuries to key players — Nick Wilson, Scooby Wright, Derek Turituri, etc.,– Rodriguez will have to coach the best game of his career for the Wildcats to have a chance by the end of the game.

Arizona has no pressure on it now at least. Maybe the role of spoiler can bring the fun back. Maybe.
