WINTER HOOPS UPDATE
Day two of the Walden Grove Soccer Invitational is in the books with Walden Grove (2-0), Sahuaro (2-0), Ironwood Ridge (2-0) and Salpointe (2-0) dominating on the girl’s side and Sunnyside (2-0), Rincon (2-0) and Vita Grande (2-0) leading on the boy’s side.
The top team from each of the three groups will make it to the semifinal round on Saturday, January 2 and the top remaining team will round out the semifinal field. Nothing is set yet but the boy’s field appears to be more of a mystery with at least four teams fighting for the fourth spot.
The Walden Grove girls have outscored opponents 15-1 so far and will make the semifinal round as the top team in Group A as long as Cienega doesn’t beat them by a score of 2-0 on Wednesday. Even then, the Red Wolves should claim the at-large spot.
Sahuaro is leading Group B by two points over Salpointe based on the formula used in the invitational. (6 points for win, 1 point for shut out, 1 point for each goal scored up to 3, no points for 0-0 tie).
The two teams will play each other on Wednesday morning with the loser hoping Cienega does not beat Walden Grove.
Ironwood Ridge is winning Group C and will clinch a playoff spot with a win over Rio Rico.
For the boys, Vista Grande is in control of Group A but Walden Grove can sneak in with a win and two goals scored. The two will meet in the final game of pool play Wednesday night.
Sunnyside is leading in Group B and Catalina Foothills would have to beat them by a score of 3-0 to claim the top spot. Rincon will take Group C with a win over Sahuarita.
