Wrestling sectionals were held all over the state Friday and Saturday in preparation for the state tournaments to be held from Feb. 11-13 at the Prescott Valley Event Center.
Ironwood Ridge won the Division I, Section I team title and Mountain View won the D-II, S-II title.
The Nighthawks qualified 12 wrestlers, Sunnyside 11, Mountain View 11, Amphitheater 11 and Benson qualified 10.
One wrestler who is expected to be the top seed in the 106-pound at state is Javier Ortiz of Mountain View. Ortiz (33-5) came in 4th place as a freshman and is the top returner in his weight class this year.
“This feels good. I needed to come back hard after last year,” Ortiz said. “I worked to get the high seed and this is something I have wanted since middle school.”
State Tournament Seeding Criteria
The following seeding criteria will be used for all Divisions of the State Wrestling Tournaments. Sectional Champions will be seeded in the sixteen (16) man State Tournament bracket using the following criteria:
1. The returning previous Arizona State Champion
2. Pre-seeding (Trackwrestling) will be determined by each wrestlers overall season winning percentage (%)
3. Head to Head will supersede criteria 1 & 2 (must be in the top four seeding pool to challenge).
4. Sectional runner-ups will receive an automatic seed corresponding to their respective Section Champion’s seed position (Sectional runner-ups will always be separated from their Sectional Champion).
5. Trackwrestling will take into account all common opponents to determine final seeding positions.
