The Pima Community College women’s basketball team was well-represented in the All-ACCAC Conference and All-Region I teams on Wednesday.
Freshmen Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde) and Denesia Smith (Cienega) along with sophomore Shalise Fernander (Flowing Wells) received recognition. In addition, Head Coach Todd Holthaus was named ACCAC Coach of the Year.
Stallworth, a guard, was named ACCAC Division II Player of the Year. She was chosen first team All-ACCAC and first team All-Region I, Division II. Stallworth played and started in all 30 regular season games for the Aztecs. She led the team in scoring with 15.7 points per game, 30.6 minutes played, 82.6 percent free throw shooting and 3.0 assists per game. She also averaged 4.7 rebounds and 2.1 steals. She was named ACCAC Division II Player of the Week four times and NJCAA Division II National Player of the Week for Dec. 7-13.
Smith, a guard, was named second team All-ACCAC and first team All-Region I, Division II. She was injured all of last season but responded this year playing in 25 games; with 24 starts. She averaged 11.6 points in 25 minutes played per game. She also averaged 4.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.5 steals. She was named ACCAC Division II Player of the Week for Nov. 16-22.
For the second straight season, Fernander, a forward, was named third team All-ACCAC and second team All-Region I, Division II. She also played in all 30 games making 26 starts. Fernander averaged 9.9 points and 6.5 rebounds in 21.7 minutes played per game.
Holthaus, in his ninth season as head coach of the Aztecs, received his second Coach of the Year honor. The team finished the regular season at 23-7 overall; the most wins for the women’s basketball program since the 2010-11 season when they went 28-7. Their ACCAC conference record of 17-5 was also the best since the 2010-11 season when they finished 18-4.
The Aztecs, a No. 1 seed, will host No. 4 seed Scottsdale Community College in the Region I, Division II tournament semifinal match-up on Tuesday at the West Campus. The game will start at 7:30 p.m.
