Pima Freshman Sydni Stallworth (Palo Verde) was selected first-team All-American on Wednesday. She is the sixth Lady Aztec to be named first team All-American and the ninth All-American in the last nine years.
Stallworth led the Aztecs to a program-tying 28-8 overall record and a third place finish at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament last month.
At only 5-foot-3, the former Southern Arizona Player of the Year had limited options according to so-called experts who never saw her play. Stallworth scored 2,182 at Palo Verde. Only 13 other athletes in the history of Arizona basketball have scored more.
“The one muscle that often gets overlooked in recruiting is the size of someone’s heart! A big heart overcomes a LOT of other perceived deficiencies,” Pima head coach Todd Holthaus said about Stallworth.
“Syd is a fierce competitor that doesn’t like to lose. When that’s your PG, good things happen with your team. Its an individual award that’s also a compliment to the team. Icing on an incredible season!”
Stallworth was named ACCAC Division II Player of the Year as she played and started in all 36 games for the Aztecs. She averaged 30.5 minutes per game and went on to score 16.0 points a game along with 4.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.2 steals. She was also 84.5 percent from the free throw line. Stallworth was also selected ACCAC Division II Player of the Week four times and NJCAA Division II Player of the Week on Dec. 16.
