Two-time state wrestling champion Yarhoski Aldiva signed with Arizona State on Friday at a ceremony held at Amphitheater. The Amphi standout is the latest wrestler to sign an NLI based also on academics under head coach Sam Portillo.
Orson Lor, Bobby Vargas, Emilio Viramontes, Carlos Castro and Cripin Chavera also attended ASU. In addition, Floyd Jones was a two-time Academic all-American at Northwest Tech (Kansas), Austin Andrade is set to graduate from Adams State and Kyle Rodriguez is off to Northwest Tech.
“What Amphi has produced in the last 10 years in the wrestling program I would match that up against any high school wrestling program in the state of Arizona,” Portillo said.
“Now Yarhoski Aldiva has the opportunity to wrestle for the Sun Devils and coach Zeke Jones. I keep telling these kids it’s all about the academics. Keep banging them books and you will control your own destination. Two-time state champion Jesus Barrera and Jose Hernandez are attending Arizona on academic scholarships.”
