New University of Arizona head women’s basketball coach and former Wildcat Adia Barnes will be hosting her first basketball camp from June 27-30 at McKale Center. The Adia Barnes Basketball Academy offers an opportunity for all athletes, regardless of ability level, to participate in an exciting week of basketball training and games.
“I want the girl’s in Tucson be excited about our team. I want them to want to play for Arizona,” Barnes explained. “This first year is going to be an individual camp but we are planning on making this really big next year.”
Helping Barnes market the camp is former Tucson High and Harvard standout Christine Clark.
“I feel this camp will be a great experience for all the girls that come and also serves as a way to introduce Coach Barnes to the Tucson girls’ basketball community,” Clark said. “I think it is so important for the Arizona women’s basketball program to be involved in Tucson girls’ basketball.”
Though nothing is guaranteed, Barnes has hit the ground running and has expressed her belief that the best talent should have every opportunity to stay home and play for Arizona.
“Definitely,” Barnes added. “We have to go after the best talent and sometimes players want to leave home but they will know they will have a place here.”
Camp league play will take place daily, giving campers the opportunity to apply what they learn in clinics and lectures while improving their overall skill and basketball knowledge.
