Courtney Gourdin (SWOSU)

Courtney Gourdin (SWOSU)

Former Marana golfer Courtney Gourdin (Southwestern Oklahoma State University) was named a Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar on Tuesday.

Gourdin, a junior, competed at SWOSU in 2015-16 after beginning her career at South Mountain Community College. She appeared in eight tournaments this past season, with a top finish of ninth place at the GAC Women’s Preview last fall. Gourdin carried a stroke average of 80.08 in 18 rounds during her first season at SWOSU with a low round of 74 (+2) at the Barry Women’s Invitational in March.

The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics, with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50 required for selection.

“I am extremely proud of Courtney for being named an Academic All-American Scholar,” SWOSU coach Brad Fleetwood said in a news release. “This award truly encompasses what it means to be a student-athlete and Courtney is a great ambassador for SWOSU Golf both in the classroom and on the golf course.”

Max Smith (R. Marsh Starks / UNLV Photo Services)

Former Canyon del Oro standout Max Smith (UNLV) was named the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League (HCBL) Rawlings Player of the Week.

According to a news release, all seven of the HCBL’s coaches voted for the awards in Week 4 and the vote ended in a tie between the Ospreys Smith (UNLV) and the Aviators Aaron Ping (San Francisco).

Smith, the third Osprey to be named Player of the Week this season, the outfielder had a productive week at the plate.

The UNLV Rebel went .444 for North Fork going 8-for-18 on the week. Smith had two home runs in Week 4 and drove in 10 RBI. In the Ospreys 9-5 road win over Shelter Island on June 26th, Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and 4 RBI.

This list will be updated all year in an effort to recognize all former local prep stars who have gone on to achieve either academic and/or athletic awards at the next level. These are not high school awards but college and professional awards. NOT CHAMPIONSHIPS. If you are aware of anything I have missed along the way, please let me know. amoralesmytucson@yahoo.com
