CATCH UP ON THE COUNTDOWN BY VISITING: ARIZONA’S TOP 100 INDIVIDUAL RECORDS
Only 38 days separate us from the start of Rich Rodriguez’s fifth season, when the Arizona Wildcats football team plays Brigham Young on Sept. 3 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.
As is customary on this Web site, we will count down the days with an interesting element associated with each day. This year the topic is the top 100 individual records in Arizona’s storied football past.
In past years, we have counted down the top games and highlighted players and some of the top plays in Arizona Wildcats football history. A couple of years ago in our top 100 countdown, we showcased the 1914 team that was responsible for Arizona becoming the “Wildcats”.
Back to this year’s countdown of the top 100 individual records in the 117 years of Arizona football:

Max Zendejas made 14 field goals of 50 yards or more in his Arizona career, a school-record number that should stand for a very long time.
Quote by Max Zendejas in a 1985 article published by the Los Angeles Times in regards to coach Larry Smith’s faith in him from all distances.

No. 38
Most Field Goals Made 50 Yards or More, Career: 14, Max Zendejas,1982-85 (23 attempts)
Pac-12 and NCAA record: 20, Jason Hanson, Washington State, 1988-91 (35 attempts)
Arizona Republic article in 1982 when Max Zendejas was only a freshman:
When it comes to long distance field goals of 50 yards or more in a career, nobody in Arizona history — heck, NCAA history — is more accurate than Maximillian Javier Zendejas.
According to the NCAA record book, Zendejas made 14 field goals from 50 yards or more in 23 attempts, a record percentage of 60.9 percent. The Arizona record book does not have such a record published and it lists Zendejas with 13 made field goals from at least 50 yards through his career from 1982 to 1985.
Zendejas also holds the Arizona record with five field goals of 50 yards or more in a season with five in 1983. He has a few more school records that have yet to be listed in this countdown.
“The guy can boot the real, real long one,” the late Larry Smith, Zendejas’ coach at Arizona, said in a 1985 Los Angeles Times article.
